John Grube: A Legacy of Leadership and Service

John Grube has never shied away from a challenge. As chairman of the board of directors for King-Bruwaert House (K-B House), he has led the organization to new heights with steadfast commitment, clear vision, and an unwavering belief in its potential.

A native of Aurora and longtime Hinsdale resident now living in Burr Ridge, John built a successful career in senior leadership at Northern Trust. He brought his vast experience to extensive volunteer work with nonprofits including the Mid-America Chapter of the American Red Cross, Brookfield Zoo, Avery Coonley School, and The Hotchkiss School. And…most significantly for this story, for more than 20 years, John has played a key leadership role at K-B House, guiding the organization through some of its most pivotal moments.

Answering the Call

John joined the K-B House board in 2005 at the suggestion of Northern Trust’s chairman, who was stepping down as the board treasurer and believed John would be a great fit. In 2016, John became board chairman during a time of important decision-making. K-B House was faced with the opportunity to merge with a larger senior living provider or remain independent. “We looked at it deliberately and comprehensively,” John recalls. The board ultimately chose independence, believing deeply in the importance of preserving K-B’s rich history, natural beauty, unparalleled campus, and unique character.

Charting a New Path

Following that decision, the board launched a major strategic planning process for determining how to pave the way for future growth. “We knew we had to upgrade healthcare, especially for residents requiring skilled nursing, and expand our independent living options,” John said. At the time, the campus offered cottages and off-site townhome rentals, but no apartment-style independent living in the central campus near the main building. That insight sparked a seven-year journey that resulted in The Gardens, luxury independent living apartments, and the Martin Jahn Pavillion providing state-of-the-art healthcare .

Seeing It Through

From initial concept through design, financing, and construction, John and the board stayed the course, navigating through the pandemic, sharply rising inflation, and numerous unforeseen headwinds. “We built what needed to be built, and came through this much stronger,” he said. “The community is thriving.”

Looking Ahead with Confidence
With the expansion complete, John reflects with pride and a sense of fulfillment. “We now have the runway for long-term sustainability. Our financials are strong. We weathered the storm.” Still, he remains focused on the future. “We’ll continue to be vigilant and thoughtful. We have a strong board, a talented management team, and a shared commitment to the mission.”

A Place Like No Other

Though he’s served for two decades, John remains energized. “I was committed to seeing this through and see greater potential now more than ever.”

“People who live here and work here recognize what we’ve built together,” he adds. “This place is special. The bond between residents and staff is real, and immediately apparent.” It is an important underpinning to a strong shared sense of community
