It is not far-fetched to think Gay Hatfield was destined to be exactly who she is. After all, how often does a name feel less like a label and more like a preview? Whether it was her mother’s intuition or a prophecy she simply chose to fulfill, Gay has a way of being precisely what her name promises. Spend even a few moments with her and you begin to wonder which came first, her spirit or the name that fits it so well.
A Place to Call Home
That same sense of joy and sunshine seems to follow Gay and her equally delightful husband, Mike, wherever they go, and it has settled beautifully into their new home in The Woods at King-Bruwaert (K-B) House in Burr Ridge/Hinsdale. One of the community’s independent living options, The Woods features unique Georgian-style cottages set on the scenic 35-acre campus. As a Life Plan Community, K-B House also offers access to assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, providing a full continuum of care. The Hatfields moved to K-B House last October.
A Lasting Partnership
Happily married for sixty years, the couple met in college through a mutual friend. “It was almost love at first sight. We just clicked and it’s been the same ever since,” Gay said. Decades later, that sense of connection remains unmistakable, not only between them, but in their shared appreciation for beauty, creativity, and community.
An Artist’s Path
Gay’s path to becoming an artist was not a straight line, but it was a natural one. After earning a degree in sociology and spending years raising her children, she returned to school to pursue a master’s in art. It was there, she said, that everything opened up. New materials, new techniques, new possibilities. “They’re spectacular,” she said, recalling the moment she realized just how expansive the opportunities in the art world could be.
Today, her paintings are predominantly in oil, a medium she has made entirely her own. Over time, she has developed a distinctive technique that layers color with remarkable depth and texture. Her paintings are often inspired by flowers and the motion of nature. She continues to create her studio space now an essential and cherished part of their home.
The Right Place at the Right Time
That home came into their lives almost by surprise. Mike noticed an open house in the real estate section, a cottage in The Woods at K-B House.
“We hadn’t really talked about moving,” he said, “but we went to take a look.” At the time, they were living in a condo in Hinsdale. When they walked into the house, everything clicked in the same way it had for them all those years ago.
“We walked in here and thought it was beautiful,” Gay said. “The rest was history.”
A Space of Their Own
They had lived in many homes over the years, always drawn to spaces that allowed for gardening and creativity. At K-B House, they found even more than they had imagined. The home was thoughtfully updated before they moved in, with renovations that reflected not just functionality but care. “They encouraged us to ask for what we wanted,” Gay said. “I don’t know how to express it. When someone is so kind and says we will do what you want and then they are true to their word, it means everything.”
The result is a space that feels entirely their own. A welcoming kitchen, beautifully redone baths, generous light, and a large room to create. For Gay, that includes both her art and her love of gardening, which has found a perfect match on a campus known for its natural beauty. With its arboretum certification, winding paths, and thoughtfully tended grounds, the setting offers constant inspiration. Flowers, trees, and seasonal changes all find their way, in one form or another, into her work.
A True Community
For Mike, the appeal is just as strong. “We find the residents are just super,” he said. What they discovered was something they had not fully anticipated, a true neighborhood. “When we were living in the condo, the only people we would meet were at the elevator. This is different. This is a real community.”
There are opportunities to connect, to share meals, to spend time with neighbors who quickly become friends. There is an ease to daily life, supported by resources and surroundings that make each day feel full without ever feeling busy for the sake of it. Good food, good conversation, and the quiet presence of nature all contribute to a sense of balance.
A Life That Fits
For Gay, the feeling is simple and profound. “The life we envisioned has been exceeded every day. Every day,” she said. “It’s a neighborhood, but one that supports this time of life.”
In many ways, it is exactly what their story has always pointed toward. A place where creativity continues, where connection deepens, and where the joy that seems to be written into Gay’s very name has found a home that reflects it back at her, again and again.
