Video chatting is fun once you get the hang of it. Face-to-face on-screen communication allows you to connect with friends and family who live far away. You can also join in on activities, education, and other great opportunities.
Choose an App You Like
If you are joining a group or an event that is already planned, you’ll need to use the app that was chosen by the organizer. If you are the organizer of the video chat, you can choose an app you like best. Here are a few:
- Skype is a great app that works on computers and mobile devices.
- Facebook Messenger is an option that works best on smartphones or other mobile devices with cameras.
- FaceTime is an Apple app, so everyone will need an Apple device.
- Google Meet has a free option and is easy to use on mobile devices and computers with a webcam.
Purchase Bluetooth Earbuds
If you are making the call from a common area in the assisted living community, your device may pick up ambient noises that can cause feedback. A pair of Bluetooth headphones or earbuds will limit how much sound is picked up. It will also guarantee that your voice will come through clearly for the person or group you are chatting with.
Use Natural Lighting and a Neutral Background
Sit in front of a wall or in a location where there’s not a lot happening behind you. Natural lighting is best for making video calls too. Sitting by a window with soft sunlight with help whoever you’re chatting with see you more clearly.
Some apps let you upload a faux background which can be a lot of fun. Some backgrounds are solid colors or can make you look like you are at the beach or in a forest.
Relax and Have Fun!
Sometimes technology can be frustrating, but don’t take yourself or your video call too seriously. Relax and have fun with the opportunities for communicating and staying connected with friends and family. Even folks who are experienced with using video chat must roll with the punches sometimes!
