The Emotional Side of Downsizing: Debuting at King-Bruwaert House

A new program, The Emotional Side of Downsizing presented by Honoring Aging, will make its debut at King-Bruwaert House, offering prospective residents meaningful guidance as they consider their next chapter.

K-B House has a strong partnership with Honoring Aging. This team of dedicated senior moving professionals led by Tammy Bilek, has decades of experience in providing assistance with every step of the moving process. Their work often begins with sorting, packing and logistics, but it also recognizes that a move involves more than the physical tasks. Honoring Aging’s new program expands the conversation by focusing on something equally important: the emotions that often accompany letting go and beginning a new chapter.

“It’s hard if you’ve lived in your home for 10 years, and hard if you’ve lived in your home for 50 years,” Tammy said. “You’re walking away from memories that you helped create for yourself and for your family in that home.”

Drawing on years of experience and research, Tammy reassures seniors that it is okay to part with sentimental belongings, even those that have been in the family for generations. “There’s an end to the life of an item, even an heirloom. And that’s okay,” she said. “There comes a time when it has been loved long enough. Now it may be time to let someone else love it.”

She also offers coping strategies and creative ways to preserve memories. And when adult children hesitate about bringing a well-worn table or treasured chair to a new residence, Tammy reminds families that familiar pieces help transform a new space into home.

At the heart of her message is a powerful perspective. Choosing to downsize and move while you are able is an important gift to your children. By making thoughtful decisions themselves, seniors maintain control, provide clarity, and spare their families from having to sort through a lifetime of belongings later.

By introducing this program first at King Bruwaert House, Honoring Aging is helping prospective residents approach their move with confidence, preparation, and peace of mind.
