The Story of King-Bruwaert House

The roots of King-Bruwaert House trace back to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where socialite Suzanne King met Francois Edmond Bruwaert, the French Consul General to the U.S. The two married a year later. They traveled through Europe extensively during Edmond’s diplomatic service. Along the way, they were inspired by peaceful, beautifully landscaped medical retreats that combined care with comfort.

Edmond retired in 1911, at which time the couple settled in Switzerland. When he passed away in 1927, Suzanne expressed great concern about the lack of dignified care for aging women of noted refinement. In her will, she left her estate to create a home that reflected the beauty and grace of the European facilities she had admired.

After an extensive search in the Chicago area, her trustees brought that vision to life. In 1931, they purchased a 35-acre estate in south Hinsdale from the Carrington family who had owned the land since 1836. Sleigh bells, gifts from the Carringtons, were presented to the trustees. Per their wish, the bells are rung every Christmas morning to this day.

Construction of the elegant French Georgian mansion began that year and was completed in 1933. Anderson and Ticknor were the architects of the three-story Georgian manor home. The mansion was set back on the property to overlook the scenic, wooded grounds. The 80-room home featured imported chandeliers, wood paneling, carved fireplaces, and timeless architectural details, all still lovingly preserved.

In April 1933, the first residents moved into the home.

Over the decades, K-B House has evolved to meet the changing needs of older adults. A key milestone came in 1979, when it merged with the historic Godair Home, opening its doors to men and couples for the first time.

Today, K-B House remains true to its founding vision: offering exceptional care in a serene, sophisticated setting. With a deep respect for tradition and an eye toward the future, it continues to be a place where seniors can thrive in comfort and dignity.
